Getting to Wanaka

Queenstown is the closest international airport.

Two routes exist, the most direct is via the Crown Range Highway and Cardrona Valley Road. Driving time is approximately 1hr 10mins depending on road conditions. Caution is advised.

This road is one of the highest sealed roads in New Zealand and can be affected by severe weather events like snow and ice.

An alternative route is via State Highway 8 through the Kawarau Gorge and Cromwell on State Highway 6. Driving time is approximately 1hr 30mins.

Collecting and returning your rental motorcycle

Ready for your adventure? You can pick up your motorcycle rental from the Wanaka Powersports Store in Wanaka at 1 Sir Tim Wallis Drive, Wanaka, New Zealand 9305.

You are required to return your motorcycle rental to the same Wanaka Powersports store at the end of the rental period, within our normal store hours. An additional fee will be payable for late returns.

*Note: Our store is closed Sundays and pick-ups and drop-offs will not be available these days. All rental pick-ups on Saturday will have a minimum two-day rental period and will need to be returned on Monday.*

What licence is required?

All riders require a full motorcycle endorsement and must be 21+ years old. 

If your license is not in English you will be required to carry an approved translation at all times. An international driving permit (IDP) is valid translation but only applies if you have the full A class license stamped.

What is the minimum age to rent a motorcycle?

All riders must be 21+ years old.

Is insurance provided?

Yes. Our motorcycles are fully insured should an accident occur on your ride. There is a mandatory bond for all rentals that acts as the excess (deducible) you will be liable for in the event of an accident. The bond is $3000 for riders aged 21-25 and $2500 for riders over 25 on most models. Damages above this amount will be covered by our insurance. Please make sure you have a credit card capable of accepting this hold when coming to pick up your rental.

Is there a height minimum for pillion passengers?

A pillion passenger must be able to reach foot pegs comfortably while seated on the pillion seat. If you are unsure don't hesitate to contact us.

How long can I rent a motorcycle?

Our current rental lengths range from one-day rides to multi-week tours. All rentals are paid at a daily rate, which covers a 24-hour rental period. Discounts are available on rentals over 7 and 14 days. Availability is dependent on the bike you choose.

Do I need safety gear?

Yes. See the required and recommended safetygear list below. You can bring the required safety gear or you may select to hire from us.

  • Full face helmet with face shield/visor or 3/4 face helmet with eye protection**

  • Close toed shoes

**Motorcycle windshield does not count as eye protection.

  • Protective gloves
  • Riding jacket or long sleeves

What should I bring?

Make sure you have your location approved helmet, eye protection and riding gear.  Don’t forget your motorcycle endorsed driver’s licence.

What model year are your bikes?

Our fleet consists of late model motorcycles, many of which are brand new and all are less than 2 years old.

What riding experience do I need?

You should be an experienced rider and able to manage varying road and weather conditions.  Depending on where you are from, be prepared to drive on the left side of the road. 

Is there anything unique about the area that I should be aware of?

Average temperatures vary from 0-5 C to 20-25 C depending on the time of year.  Annual rainfall can be between 640mm and 1500mm, please check the weather conditions. Roads in New Zealand are often narrow, hilly and windy with plenty of sharp corners.

How much storage should I expect to have on the bike?

Most of our vehicles will have side bags with liners so that you can remove and take inside with you.  Please be sure to check the individual accessories on each vehicle.

Are there unlimited kilometres available during the rental?

Kilometres are limited to 500 per day which is often plenty while you are touring New Zealand.  Additional charges will apply for extra kilometres.

Cancellation Policy

Drivers can request to change or cancel a booking by contacting us directly. Cancellations are subject to the terms below and reservation changes are subject to approval and availability. All cancellations are subject to credit vouchers, which are only valid for alternate bookings. 

Cancellation requests for rentals over 7 days made: 

- up to 7 days before the start of the rental will receive a credit of 20% deposit paid 

- over 7 days before the start of the rental will receive a credit of 60% deposit paid 

Cancellation requests for rentals 6 or fewer days made:  

- up to 48 hours before the start of the rental will receive a credit of 20% deposit paid 

- over 48 hours before the start of the rental will receive a credit of 60% deposit paid
